Emergency preparedness week – are you prepared?

WATERLOO REGION – This year, Emergency Preparedness Week takes place May 6-12 and local municipalities, emergency services, conservation authorities and utility companies want to make sure you are prepared in the event of an emergency.

“This week highlights the importance of being prepared by focusing on three simple things; know your risks, have a plan and get a kit,” said Steve LaRochelle, Manager of Emergency Management and Business Continuity for the City of Kitchener.  “The Community Emergency Management Coordinators (CEMC) will be at various events this week to discuss emergency preparedness with individuals and families. We encourage people to ask themselves the basic question, ‘If you had to leave your home in 10 minutes, what would you and your family need to survive for the next 72 hours?’”

Residents can learn more by attending these exciting, local events:

  • Cambridge Centre, 355 Hespeler Rd., Cambridge, Monday, May 7 to Thursday, May 10. Stop by the emergency preparedness week booth to learn how to build your 72-hour emergency survival kit and family emergency plan.

  • CANWARN – Weather Watchers Training Course, Wednesday, May 9 from 7 - 9 p.m. at RIM Park (Forbes Room), 2001 University Ave. E., Waterloo. Those attending this free course will learn about severe and non-severe thunderstorms, what to watch for, and what to report. Email geoff.coulson@canada.ca to register.

  • Emergency Preparedness Open House, Friday, May 11 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Woolwich Memorial Centre, 24 Snyder Ave. S, Elmira. Admission is free and attendees can watch live demonstrations, check out information displays and speak with emergency management professionals.

  • WRPS Open House, Saturday, May 12 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Children’s Safety Village, 200 Maple Grove Rd., Cambridge. Visit the emergency preparedness booth and speak with emergency management staff from the City of Kitchener.

  • Cambridge Public Works Open House, Saturday, May 26 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at 1310 Bishop St., Cambridge. Visit the emergency preparedness booth co-hosted with the Cambridge Humane Society, Pet Value and the Cambridge Fire Department.

  • Cambridge Farmers’ Market, Saturday, May 5, Wednesday, June 27 and Saturday, Sept. 29 from 7 a.m. – 1 p.m. at 40 Dickson St., Cambridge. Visit the emergency preparedness booth co-hosted with the Cambridge Humane Society focusing on preparing an emergency kit for your pet and flood information.

 

Waterloo Region created a website to ensure that residents have access to local emergency information including types of emergencies that could happen locally and what to do to ensure families are safe.
